Giselle Tickets
Overview
Mary Skeaping's entthalling production of Giselle returns to the Coliseum for thirteen performances only in January 2024. Innocence, betrayal and the redemptive power of true love that transcends even death provides the heart of this most famous and poignant of romantic ballets first performed in Paris in 1841.
Giselle retells the haunting legend of a young peasant girl who is driven to kill herself when she discovers that her lover, the charming Count Albrecht, has deceived her. Joining the ghostly ranks of betrayed women who rise from the dead to prey on the men who have destroyed them, Giselle cannot bring herself to seek vengeance. Instead, she protects her remorseful lover when he visits her moonlit grave, defending him until dawn from the deathly touch of her phantom sisters.
The sensitive and atmospheric staging heightens the contrasting human and supernatural worlds, transporting you from the bright, sunny optimism of the village to a ghostly, mist-wreathed forest glade full of mystery and menace. Adolphe Adam’s music, performed live by English National Ballet Philharmonic, is an exquisite accompaniment to the thoroughly magical choreography.
