A garden party is in full swing at Lady Jane Hunstanton's country estate, where overbearing snob Lady Caroline Pontefract is holding court and gossiping with her contemporaries including the pompous Archdeacon Daubeny, Lady Stutfield and Hester Worsley, a wealthy young American visiting England for the first time. When it is announced that young bank clerk Gerald Arbuthnot has been appointed personal secretary to the louche Lord Illingworth, his mother makes her disapproval clear but refuses to divulge why. What secrets lay buried in her past?
