Overview
Asterios the Minotaur - a creature with the head of a bull and the body of a man - has been imprisoned in a huge, intricately constructed labyrinth on the island of Crete by King Minos. Every year, seven young men and seven maidens are sacrificed to the beast to satisfy his cannibalistic hunger and repay an old debt. Can Athenian hero Theseus end this bloodshed once and for all?
Stephen Langridge directs a revival of Harrison Birtwistle's interpretation of this ancient Greek myth which focuses on the troubled inner world of the Minotaur and his longing to discover his true identity and voice. Forward Prize-winning poet David Harsent provides a libretto of lyrical intensity, continuing a rich, creative partnership with Birtwistle.
The Minotaur brings a dark and visceral dramatic world to the stage. The Overture is played against a backdrop of menacing waves, which herald the darkness to come and the piece is pervaded by a sense of primaeval inevitability. Alison Chitty's elegant designs reimagine the centre of the labyrinth as an amphitheatre-like space, where the Minotaur gores his victims. But the Minotaur also has a human side – during his dreams he acquires language and gives voice to his dark existence in monologues of poignant power. The central role, written for the acclaimed bass John Tomlinson, wears a bull's head mask, reminiscent of those used in ancient Greek rituals.

The venue is fully accessible to wheelchair users. There are spaces for wheelchair users and transfer seating is available.
A Brahler infra-red assisted-hearing facility is available in the main auditorium and the Linbury Studio Theatre. Collect headsets from the cloakroom in the main foyer.
Guide dogs are allowed into the auditorium and staff are available to dog sit if required.
