La Traviata Tickets
Overview
Richard Eyre's popular production of La Traviata returns to the Royal Opera House featuring Ermonela Jaho, Angel Blue, Plácido Domingo and Charles Castronovo. Bob Crowley's lavish designs evoke the decadent whirl of Parisian society, while a dual cast of singers bring to life a score that rings with some of Verdi's most enduring melodies.
Social scandal provides the setting for Verdi's operatic version of La Dame aux Camélias, and scandal is what the opera itself provoked when it was first seen in 1853. For any such tale of true love thwarted by society's conventions has always held a prurient fascination, even more so when the fallen woman evolves into a sympathetic and tragic heroine.
The young Alfredo Germont has fallen passionately in love with Violetta Valéry, a famed courtesan, threatening to bring scandal on his family and ruin the future marriage of his sister. In an intense confrontation, Giorgio, Alfredo's stern and unyielding father, discovers that Violetta's love is truly noble, while only too late Alfredo discovers the truth of her selfless sacrifice.
This production is performed in Italian with English surtitles.
