German director Jan Philipp Gloger's production of Così Fan Tutte returns to the Royal Opera House. Urbane, sophisticated and pyschologically astute, the modern designs emphasize just how contemporary this look at love, misplaced trust and deception remains today.
Comedy or tragedy? The borderline becomes increasingly unclear in Mozart and Da Ponte's great opera as Ferrando and Guglielmo attempt to win each other's girlfriends following a bet with their friend Don Alfonso. The men pretend to be called away to war, only to return in disguise where each begins to woo the other’s lover. Will Dorabella have her head turned by the disguised Guglielmo? Can Fiordiligi be persuaded to redirect her affections to the unrecognized Ferrando?
What begins as a joke for the two men soon turns into a dark and dangerous game that tests everyone's relationships to extremes.........
Accepted as one of Mozart’s masterpieces, the sublime score, ranging from the serenity of Soave sia il vento to the defiant drama of Come scoglio, is conducted by Italian conductor Stefano Montanari.
The opera is sung in Italian with English surtitles.
