Overview

Laurence Connor's major new revival of the 1984 musical Chess by Tim Rice and ABBA songwriters Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus opens at the London Coliseum in April for a limited 5 week run starring Michael Ball, Alexandra Burke, Murray Head, Tim Howar and Cassidy Janson.

Set against the backdrop of the Cold War in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Chess tells a story of love, rivalry and political intrigue as two superpowers attempt to manipulate an international chess championship for propoganda and political ends.

Two of the world’s greatest chess grandmasters, American Freddie Trumper and Russian Anatoly Sergievsky, are manipulated by their governments as their battle for the world title gets under way in Italy. Simultaneously their lives are thrown into further confusion by a bitter struggle to win the heart of Hungarian refugee Florence Vassy and Anatoly's defection from the USSR.

Featuring English National Opera’s award-winning orchestra and chorus, the score includes the international hit singles I Know Him So Well and One Night In Bangkok together with the songs Anthem, Someone Else’s Story, Heaven Help My Heart and Pity The Child.

Please note no under 5s will be admitted.
