Overview
The Royal Opera House presents Australian director Barrie Kosky’s intense and highly original production of Georges Bizet's much-loved opera Carmen, with Jakub Hrůša and Christopher Willis conducting two casts led by Anna Goryachova and Gaëlle Arquez in the title role. Kosky’s unconventional version incorporates music written by Bizet for the score but not usually heard, and replaces the spoken dialogue by the voice of a female narrator, giving a fresh take on the opera’s endlessly fascinating central character.
Based on a novella of the same name by Prosper Mérimée, Bizet's Carmen is one of those rare operas in which every tune seems to be a familiar favourite melody with numbers such as the Habanera and the Toreador Song permeating the popular consciousness as little else has. With its heady combination of passion, obsession, jealousy, violence and revenge, it is jam-packed with sexy solos, rousing choruses, impassioned arias and Spanish dances. Melodic, evocative and dramatic, Carmen has remained one of the most popular works in the opera repertory since it first appeared on the Paris stage in 1875.
Naïve young soldier Don José intends to marry his childhood sweetheart Micaëla, but when he meets the fickle Spanish temptress Carmen, he sacrifices everything to be with her. As Carmen grows tired of José she begins an affair with glamorous toreador Escamillo, forcing the obsessed Don José into a jealous rage which ends in tragedy.
This performance is sung in French with English surtitles.

The venue is fully accessible to wheelchair users. There are spaces for wheelchair users and transfer seating is available.
A Brahler infra-red assisted-hearing facility is available in the main auditorium and the Linbury Studio Theatre. Collect headsets from the cloakroom in the main foyer.
Guide dogs are allowed into the auditorium and staff are available to dog sit if required.
