Subverting the traditional rules of romance, Shakespeare's uplifting comic masterpiece As You Like It comes to the Barbican in the RSC's playful and imaginative new production directed by Kimberley Sykes. Gender roles, nature and politics are all confused in a play that reflects on how bewildering yet utterly pleasurable life can be. This rustic romp packed with music, laughs, cross-dressing confusion and a dash of wrestling will keep you smiling to the last.
In fear of her life and with her father the Duke wrongly banished and in exile, Rosalind flees to Arden Forest for safety with her cousin Celia and the court jester Touchstone in tow. Orlando, a young gentleman of the kingdom who is the object of Rosalind's affection, is also forced to flee his home after being persecuted by his older brother, Oliver.
What ensures is a riotous combination of a feisty cross-dressing heroine, a tartan-clad fool, melodic songs and laugh aplenty as the lovers become entangled in a beguiling game of love, lust and mistaken identity. Sparkling with wit, this joyous tale of a girl disguised as a young man - who tempts the man she loves to fall for the boy she isn't - is flavoured with all the longing and pain of everyone's first big romance.

Access
The Main entrance at Silk Street is ramped and lifts give access to all levels. All venues have seating for wheelchair users.
A radio network system is provided in the theatre and pit for visitors with hearing impairments. Headsets can be collected from Theatre Stalls Right prior to the performance.
Assistance dogs can be taken into the theatre or left with a member of staff.
