Antigone Tickets
Overview
Polly Findlay directs Don Taylor's version of Sophocles' play, Antigone, the first great resistance drama - and perhaps the definitive Greek tragedy.
In a brutal power struggle for the city of Thebes, brothers Polyneices and Eteocles have both been killed in battle. Creon, the new ruler of Thebes, has forbidden the burial of the rebel traitor Polyneices and decreed that his body will not be sanctified by holy rites and will lay unburied, left to rot and be eaten by animals.
The rule is strict and clear: whoever dares to bury Polyneices will be punished with death. The people daren't object, but Antigone, Polyneices' sister and Creon's niece, is outraged by her brother's humiliation and defies the edict. Enraged, Creon condemns Antigone to death and buries her alive in a cave.
But the gods aren't happy with Creon and his fate is sealed, for the gods never move faster than when punishing men with the consequences of their own actions.
Starring Jodie Whittaker as Antigone and Christopher Eccleston as Creon.
