The Children's Hour Tickets
Overview
Keira Knightley, Elisabeth Moss and Ellen Burstyn star in Ian Rickson's highly anticipated revival of Lillian Hellman's visionary masterpiece, The Children's Hour.
First staged on Broadway in 1934, the play was banned in London, Boston and Chicago due to its controversial subject matter. In 1961, it was adapted for film under the title The Loudest Whisper and starred Audrey Hepburn, Shirley MacLaine and James Garner. Generations on, its potent exploration of a culture of fear remains startlingly relevant.
Set in conservative 1930's New England, The Children's Hour is a compelling drama about the power of a lie and the havoc it wreaks on innocent lives. A private boarding school for young girls is scandalized when a spiteful student starts a malicious rumour accusing the two schoolmistresses of having a lesbian affair. With reputations in tatters and many pupils immediately withdrawn from the school, the salacious gossip sets in motion a chain of events which proceeds to destroy the women's careers, relationships and lives, ending with tragic consequences before the lie is finally exposed.
